Within the Grotte Chauvet, one of the most significant prehistoric art sites in the world, there is a wall covered in handprints. This accumulation of human touch was created over thousands of years, a persistent layering of consciousness. Upon learning about WWI foxhole radios, a fantasy occurred to me: what if primitive radios signals helped kickstart consciousness? A glass handprint pushes out from the wall, ready to be met with the red ochre of early humans. Galena lead crystals are placed along the base of this sculpture, connected by copper wires and small springs that vibrate in the air. Upon contact with the crystals, signals in the air are demodulated. Coils snake up the back, antennas extend from fingertips, and above copper is grounded to a fire sprinkler. 5 radios are formed. Too simple to be tuned, they only offer static, which itself carries an echo of The Big Bang.
