Bound Head
Watercolor, india ink, trace of graphite on paper , 27.25'' x 22'', 2026
Against a dark ground, a stitched blue form presses into a red head whose mouth opens into rows of crowded teeth. The image feels trapped between wanting, hiding, and hurting itself. Hyunjun uses the body as a place where misguided desire does not lead to pleasure, but to pressure and distortion. The repeated stitches suggest repair, but they also make the body look bound, exposed, and unable to escape itself. In this form, shame is not a quiet emotion; it becomes physical, visible, and almost aggressive. The work shows how a person can keep returning to the same damaging impulse even when it causes pain. Through this strange, tense body, Hyunjun makes self-sabotage feel like something both absurd and deeply human.
I cannot stop returning to the body as a site of stupid desire, shame, and self-sabotage..
